Basic Productivity Tools
There are three types of BPTs; word processing, spreadsheet and presentation. Word processing has pages that contain text and graphics. Spreadsheets have numerical information in column-row formats and allows for calculations, and lastly, presentations allows information to be presented in a slide show format. The difference between BPTs and instructional software is that does not guide and help a student with the information. BPTs are tools that allow students to display and calculation of their information.
Two examples of BPT are Graph Club and Microsoft Excel. These BPT can be used in the classroom as supplements to help students, but also allow students to input data to create final products to be used in assignments and projects. These tools can be applied high up in the LoTi levels if students publish and display their work to the public via display boards or on a classroom’s blog. For a lesson to reach LoTi, there would be an expert to come into the classroom to discuss the subject that is being taught. However, it is possible for lessons and assignments revolved around BPTs to reach LoTi 6.
The current trends in BPTs are mobile apps, web based tools, safety and security and available digitally. Most of BPTs can be accessed via smart phone, however, not all of them are mobile friendly such as Graph Club. There is an app called Numbers that is available for smart phone, which is very similar to Microsoft Excel. This app would be considered to be a BPT, available for free, and safe for students to use.
