Blogs
Blogs are great utilities to use in the classroom especially keeping up a classroom blog. A class blog is helpful for parents/guardians to know what is going on in the classroom. The blog can include various things such as newsletters, calendar, daily schedules, important events, and children’s work. However, when it comes to blogs teachers must keep two important laws and acts in mind; FERPA and CIPA.
There are two important laws and acts that teachers must keep in mind while working in the classroom. The two important things are FERPA and CIPA. Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act (FERPA) is a Federal law that protects the privacy of student’s education records. The law applies to all schools that receive funds under any applicable program of US Department of Education. Children’s Internet Protection Act (CIPA) addresses concerns about children’s access to obscene or harmful content over the Internet. Teachers must receive consent from parents of the students in the classroom before publishing or posting any photos or videos of the children but also posting or publishing any of the students’ work without signed consent. Teachers must keep an eye on their students while working with computers as some students may linger on the Internet and may use open search engines.
I hope to use a classroom blog as a teacher. I will make weekly online newsletters for parents to view. There will be a calendar that will hold important dates, and there will be a page that will have a daily schedule so parents can remember in case they wish to visit their child, of course, preplanned ahead of time. The blog will also have important dates such as field trip dates or special events that parents can come to see. There will be photos of students’ work with parental consent.
