An interactive whiteboard is an electronic version of a regular whiteboard. These interactive whiteboards are connected to a computer and digital project that allows information to be projected on to the screen and to be manipulated with special pens or an individual’s hand. Some of the systems can allow for drawing or note taking. The two most popular interactive whiteboard brands are Prometheus’ Promethean ActivBoard and SMART technology’s SMART board. Using Activspire, teachers can create their own lesson plans to be used on the interactive whiteboard, but also, there are collaboration websites that provide premade lesson plans that were created by fellow teachers. Collaboration websites that can be used are Smart Exchange and Promethean Planet.
Students can use the interactive whiteboard during class time in multiple ways. Students can drag their name over to attendance as an example. Students can use the whiteboard for assessments, polling or even answer questions that the teacher may write on the board. The interactive whiteboard can provide engaging and stimulating lessons for the students and can allow students to be rather involved within the lesson.
As a teacher, I plan on using the interactive whiteboard as much as I can. I find that students may enjoy coming up to the board to answer questions or even show how they answered a math problem. I find that the interactive whiteboard can useful through teaching lessons. I plan on creating my own lesson templates using Activspire, but also, find some lessons that were created by others and adjust them to how my students learn in the classroom. Interactive whiteboards will be used in many ways throughout the school whether it be for when students drag their name across the board to say that they are present in the class or even when students are working on a mathematics assignment and creating a poll for that assignment.
There are positives and negatives of using an interactive whiteboard for classroom usage. The interactive whiteboard can be student led or teacher led depending on the lesson being used during that time. This can be seen as a positive but also as a negative. Not all students will understand the material as well as others, and there may be teacher guidance. Student led type of lessons can be geared towards older children rather than younger. However, this does not mean student led pace should be discouraged. The most popular would be teacher led.
